Additional and exciting technological developments are taking place in tractor design with emphasis on precision farming, communications and information technologies. These are intended to enhance performance and take account of energy conservation, environmental protection and sustainability considerations. Water power was widely used for milling purposes in Europe during the Middle Ages; at about the same time wind power is reported to have been used in China and Europe as well. In nineteenth-century Europe and North America, oxen were displaced by horses, which provided power for many mechanical devices from about 1850 to as late as 1965.
